1.3.4.4.4 Susan Hartman Latimer Sarber (b: 19 Feb 1831-d: 29 Dec 1913 Kosciusko County, Indiana) married Lyman Law Lattimer (30 Jan 1816-4 Dec 1862) on 5 Jun 1853. Here is a narrative about Lyman and his family.

Lyman Latimer had a general store in Palestine, Kosciusko County, Indiana between 1850-1860. Lyman’s father was Marion M. Latimer. The family was known for right living and industrious habits, education and morality, and all that contributes to the welfare of the commonwealth. Many years ago the grandfather of the subject crossed the ocean from England and settled in the Nutmeg state. There he resided for some time, but finally came to this county and here lived the remainder of his days.

His son, Lyman L., was reared on his father’s farms, partly in Connecticut and partly in this state. Upon reaching manhood he met and married Miss Susan Hartman. At first he entered a store at Warsaw and served as a clerk for a number of years, but then came to Palestine and went into business for himself with a general stock of goods, and thus continued some years. He died December 4, 1862. His marriage had occurred June 5, 1853.

The Hartmans were of German descent and originated in this country in Pennsylvania, thence removed to Ohio, and from there came to the Hoosier state. To Lyman Latimer and wife, the following children were born: Lemuel L., who wedded Miss Alice Bickle, and is now in the hardware business with his brother; Marion M,. subject; Tillie, deceased; Norman N., who married first Mollie Bybee, and second, Gina Baker and is a hardware merchant in Mentone; Hannah became the wife of William Baker and resides in Harrison township; Sofia is unmarried and lives with her mother in Mentone. Lyman Latimer was a man of much force of character and was a useful and honorable citizen. At the time of his death he left a comfortable estate, and also a good name which his children are using to their credit. He was a charter member of Kosciusko Lodge No. 62, I. O. O. F., organized January 9, 1849.

Susan and Lyman had six children: Lyman L. ‘Lem’ Latimer (1854-1942), Marion Monroe Latimer (1856-1949), Matilda Elizabeth Latimer (1857-1862), Norman Nash Latimer (1859-1904), Hannah M. Latimer (1860-1932), and Matilda Elizabeth ‘Sophia’ Latimer (1863-1932).

After Lyman died, Susan remarried to Christian C. Sarber (16 Sep 1813-1 Sep 1880). They had five additional children: Catherine Sarber Gibbs (21 Jul 1846-4 Jan 1921), Nettie ‘Netta’ Lucinda Sarber (1868-1939), Anna Rebecca ‘Annie’ Sarber (1870-1909), Julia Etta Sarber (1871-1908), and Isaac Hartman Sarber (1879-1952).

1.3.4.4.5 Simon Hartman (b: 15 Aug 1832-d: 8 Aug 1912 Kosciusko County, Indiana) married Mariah R. Martin (1840-1866). They had a daughter before Mariah died at age 26: Julietta Hartman (1863-1939). Simon then married Catherine Deardorff (20 May 1841-28 Nov 1925) on 5 May 1868 in Indiana. Simon and Catherine had four sons together: Ulysses M. Hartman (1870-1947), Harry Herbert Hartman (1873-1924), Charles Claude Hartman (1875-1965), and Fred B. Hartman (1879-194). In the 1870 U.S. Census, a young girl age 7 named Ida A. Deardorff (21 May 1863-27 May 1939 Indiana) is living with them. It is possible that this is Catherine’s younger sister or a niece. Perhaps one of her brothers died in the Civil War and Simon and Catherine adopted Ida, who was the same age as Julietta.
