Samuel married Elizabeth Slater (b: Abt. 1811-d: 26 Sep 1861) on 14 Sep 1834, who coincidentally had the same last name as his mother. They had 10 children together. Tragically, many of their children died at very young ages, likely due to complications from the flu virus.
Elizabeth died in 1861, and Samuel remarried to Martha A. Campbell (b: 17 Feb 1833-d: 27 Mar 1927) on 21 Sep 1863, and they had an additional five children. A significant number of Samuel’s descendants relocated to Ohio.
Samuel was a farmer. In 1870, by age 57 he had accumulated $7,000 worth of real estate (worth $137,000 in 2020) and had $1,720 (about $20,000 in 2020) in other assets, which were considered substantial amounts to an American of that era.
