1.3.5.7 John S. Keslar (13 Aug 1815-6 Mar 1845)
John S. Keslar married Elizabeth Keslar Ulery (b: abt. 1822-d: aft. 1900) before 1844. They had one son, Jacob ‘Jake’ at the time of John’s death in 1845. Elizabeth married a neighbor, Jacob Ulery (Jacob’s stepfather) (b: Feb 1827-d: May 1904) after 1845 and had two daughters by Jacob.
1.3.5.7.1 Jacob ‘Jake’ Kesler (b: 6 Jun 1844 Salt Lick Township-d: 27 Jun 1916 Westmoreland, Pa.) married Eliza Jane Crossland (b: 14 Dec 1847 Bullskin-d: 4 Mar 1893 Fayette County, Pa.). Jake and Eliza had 10 children.
Jacob was a private in the 161st Pennsylvania 16th Calvary, Company B. According to his discharge papers, Jacob mustered in on 02/25/1864. The 16th Calvary was one of the most renowned cavalry regiments in the service of the United States in the War of the Rebellion. It was comprised of men from twenty Pennsylvania counties. Early on, the 16th was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and fought its first battle at Kelly’s Ford. The 16th fought at Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Ely’s Ford, Gettysburg, Shepherdstown, Mine Run, Luray, Front Royal, Manassas Gap, Wilderness at Rapidan, Richmond – Hanover Church and Hawes Shop, Lynchburg – Trevillian Station, St. Mary’s Church, Malvern Hill, Deep Run, White’s Tavern, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Spring Church, Boydton, Hatcher’s Run. Jacob Kesler was with the 16th Calvary in the closing campaign and the 16th was constantly active at this time. He would have been involved in the battles of Dinwiddie’s Courthouse, Five Forks, Amelia Springs, Sailor’s Creek, and Farmville. General Lee surrendered April 9th, 1865. The 16th was stationed at Lynchburg to guard captured stores and preserve order. Jacob Kesler mustered out on May 15, 1865. According to Verne Kesler’s letter, Jacob came home because he was wounded. This would explain why Jacob came home before the 16th Calvary was taken out of service on August 7th, 1865. Jacob’s discharge papers state “reason – directions from the War Dept. dated May 3, 1865.”
Jacob Kesler’s funeral was held at his son Leroy’s home in Scottdale. Jacob is buried at Fairview Community Church, 491 Gimlet Hill Rd., Mt. Pleasant, PA. This is within a mile or two of the family home. The church and cemetery is atop a hill and the Kesler tombstone overlooks a large lake. The four-sided tombstone has a family member listed on each side as follows:
KESLER Jacob, died June 27, 1916, aged 72 yrs 21 days

Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Ann Ulery were not Keslar family members. They were fathered by Jacob Ulery and his wife Elizabeth. They were included here because they were likely very close to Jake Keslar as he grew to adulthood.
1.3.5.7.2 Mary Elizabeth Ulery Halfhill (b: 1 Dec 1848-d: 3 Jan 1931 Connellsville, Fayette County, Pa)
1.3.5.7.3 Sarah Ann Ulery Davis (b: 25 Jul 1850-d: 1896)
In April, 2017 I received an e-mail from Richard J. Kesler (Rich). Here is what he said:
“I recently received my Family Tree DNA report, and it shows we are related. I saw your email address there. I am able to trace most of my family to Europe but am unable to get very far with my surname, Kesler with one “s.” Maybe you can help? Here is a brief version of my tree:
Richard J. Kesler – John P. Kesler – James C. Kesler – Richard C. Kesler – Jacob H. Kesler 1844 – 1916 – Jacob Ulery relation unknown (I am from Ohio and Jacob was from PA)
After researching the mystery, and knowing that we are genetically related, we concluded that Jacob H. Kesler’s mother was probably Elizabeth Ulery and his father was probably John S. Kessler who was born 1/11/1813 and died 3/6/1845, the year after Jacob was born.
Elizabeth was 28 in 1850 and that would make her 21 or 22 years old when Jacob was born in 1844. Her birth year would be something either 1822 or 1823. This suggests that John and Elizabeth married before 1844, parented Jacob in 1844, and then John died sometime in 1845. That likely explains why Elizabeth remarried a short time later, to Jacob Ulery.
According to the 1850 U.S. Census, Jacob Ulery was 5 years younger than Elizabeth. And according to the 1840 Census for Salt Lick, John Kesler lived only 3 or 4 properties away from a Peter Ulery in Saltlick. We can assume that John and Elizabeth Kessler knew the Ulery’s and that perhaps they even hired young Jacob Ulery to work on their farm. It is possible that they named their son after him. That would have created a sense of responsibility in Jacob Ulery that would explain his willingness to marry Elizabeth after John’s death and to raise his son.
In the 1860 Census Jacob & Elizabeth Ulery are 33 and 38, respectively. There children include Jacob Kesler, 17, Mary Elizabeth Ulery, 12, and Sarah A. Ulery, 10. It is not known why Mary and Sarah were not listed in the 1850 Census.
One curious fact is that both John S. Kesler and his older brother Elias Kesler died on the same day, March 6th, 1845. Efforts were made to locate newspaper or other obituary information explaining what happened to them, but no information could be located. This suggests that their deaths were not health-related but were in fact traumatic.
A final note related to this part of the family history. The preceding work was accomplished by “walking the roads” of Salt Lick. This means finding a relative in the Census for a particular year and then going page-by-page through that Census, observing who lived near whom, and looking for relatives living just down the road. It takes a lot of time and patience to do this, but it’s fun.
While “walking” the 1850 Salt Lick Census it was learned that a third son had accompanied Andreas to Westmoreland County. Initially it was believed that Andreas traveled to Westmoreland/Fayette County with two sons …. Peter and George. By examining the 1850 Census it was determined that Peter was there – age 70 with wife Mary, age 69, and a young female named Martha, age 17. George was there at age 72. But another of Andreas’ sons was there too, William, age 66, and his wife Nancy Slater Kessler.

This letter was written by 1.3.5.7.1.2.1 Verne Mary Kesler Baker, the granddaughter of 1.3.5.7 John S. Kesler. Her father was 1.3.5.7.1.2 Leroy ‘Lee’ Crossland Kesler and her grandfather was John’s only son, 1.3.5.7.1 Jacob ‘Jake” Kesler, survivor of the Civil War.
The following letter was written to Mary Jane (Kesler) and Paul Karrick by Verne Baker, daughter of Leroy “Lee” C. Kesler. “Don” mentioned in the letter is Don Baker, Verne’s husband. It is unknown at this point who Clair is as Jim Kesler does not remember Don and Verne having children. A Rev. Leroy C. Kesler is still living in Fayette Co. Pennsylvania, however, he did not respond to requests for information. [Brackets] indicate something not written by Verne.
Sunday A.M. Early
Dear Mary Jane and Paul:
This A.M. while I may be thinking a wee bit more clearly, I’ll try to tell you about Grandpa Kesler [JACOB]. There is no crest that I know of but I am pretty sure he was German. – Just recently saw the name in a historical program from Germany – since Don served in the First World War – I sort of look at that country with a great deal of dissatisfaction. He was a member of “The Great Army of the Republic” – A real fine organization meaning as much by “The Civil War” as D.A.R. to the Rebellion. There is a metal insignia on his grave of “The Stone Masons of America.” There is a US Flag flies always on his grave at Fairview at Hammondville [unreadable]. I will soon be taking flowers there. We always do, we have 14 graves to decorate.
Now, Uncle Charles told you when mamma died in 1954 that before the Civil War, grandpa Kesler chased his father away because he was a southern sympathizer. – Then he married. Mr. Henry Ulery – grandpa Ulery spent more time at Uncle Ed’s in Mt. Pleasant, as did grandad and so I think they would have had more of their personal papers and belongings.
I do have somewhere a letter grandad wrote in the Civil War sending money to Mr. Henry Ulery as he addressed him, to take care of for him. – in other words to bank it. [next sentence written in the margin] Grandpa Ulery lived in a little white house in the corner of their lot and helped raise the children, all 9 of them!
He came home from the War in 1865 wounded, and married Jane Crossland from nearby Woodale, (mamma’s place of birth and Grandma Coughenour – Crossland’s lived at Hammondville in sight of grandma C’s Wonderful Rural Country. They made men out there at Country schools and Churches – that’s about all I know.
Clair will stop over on his way to his ill sister-in-laws in Uniontown and return the next week here for a few days. He also brings his girlfriend here to spend time with her sister – They are Mennonites – sort of taxi – see?!
I may repeat but Dad told me once that a Kesler uncle had come from “the West” and wanted to take him back to educate him, he said he did not go because the other brothers did not have the chance. That sounds like “My Dad.”
Later on at grandma Coughenour’s I saw a check with a Kesler’s name on from some far state in the West. When I sold or rather almost gave grandma C’s to Rev. Leroy C. Kesler – I got very little out of the house, was not physically able to do it and of course right or wrong Leroy got almost everything. He is a great preacher though, and a credit to our name. He is pastor of the Mt. Zion Community Church at [Acme?], and has a large successful Academy there – 8 grades and 4 years of high school.- they often come to see M – he is my youngest Bros. son. He has a boy Leroy IV a daughter Cindy Lee and a younger son named Todd.
Monday We had a terrible tornado in Greensburg yesterday. It did a lot of damage in Westmoreland Co. We are not used to that. It was terrible. That is about 12 miles from here.
Clair stops tomorrow A.M. and then will return day after decoration Tues A.M.
Waiting for Clair – he’ll be here about 45 min. and then return next Tues for 4 days. He always keeps his schedule – we always go to Fairview cemetery – and Scottdale and take 14 floral pieces – when we had grandma and Mother’s, I always took beautiful posies.
Today is school picnic day at Kenneywood Park – 3 large buses just left the Y.M.C.A. across the street – I’m about the first house downtown and it was the first house – when our town was called “Fountain Mills.” – There is a beautiful park across the street – with a gazebo and beautiful landscaping – it’s all abloom now, with azaleas – They hold the band concert there and every Sat several wedding parties come from the churches to have their pictures taken on the gazebo steps. Never a dull moment.
Wed A.M. Clair came and gone to return back Sat and we go to the cemeteries.
Fairview at Hammondville, grandad and grandmother Kesler, Uncle Harry, and little Rosie Belle. [next sentence written in the margin] Leroy died today in 1946.
Grandpa and grandma Coughenour. Our baby, grandma’s baby, Aunt Carrie, Uncle Will and his wife. It’s almost a sight of Dad’s old home. It’s a picturesque place high on a hill overlooking a big expanse of water – a dam put there in the last five years – That’s what grandpa Kesler looks at – he would love it. They all were members of this little Church.
Next door to me is a beautiful funeral home. This A.M. They are taking out all of the beautiful shrubbery – 2 gorgeous blue spruce trees – It shielded me so from the North Winds – My house will stand out so – I don’t like that.
Honestly Mary Jane this is a crazy letter – hope you enjoy it. ha! ha!
Then too, – I live across from the Y.M.C.A. Never a dull moment “Good for old ladies.
Love Verne

Jacob Kesler and his family lived at 333 Gimlet Hill Rd., Bullskin Twp., Mt. Pleasant, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, 15660. Tax ID 04-15-0017 Deed Book 970-41.
Jacob was a private in the 161st Pennsylvania 16th Calvary, Company B. According to his
discharge papers, Jacob mustered in on 02/25/1864. The 16th Calvary was one of the most
renowned cavalry regiments in the service of the United States in the War of the Rebellion. It was comprised of men from twenty Pennsylvania counties. Early on, the 16th was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and fought its first battle at Kelly’s Ford. The 16th fought at Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Ely’s Ford, Gettysburg, Shepherdstown, Mine Run, Luray, Front Royal, Manassas Gap, Wilderness at Rapidan, Richmond – Hanover Church and Hawe’s Shop, Lynchburg – Trevillian Station, St. He would have been involved in the battles of Dinwiddies Courthouse, Five Forks, Amelia Springs, Sailor’s Creek, and Farmville.

John Kesler was an athlete as a child and as an adult and was always in excellent physical condition. He was a runner and lifted weights. John Kesler was a tall, handsome man and was the “life of the party.” He was a natural leader of men. John had several inventions while at American Standard, one being the “Kesler Drop-In Spag.” This replaced the forced-air brass drying system with a plastic tubing that remained in the ware, saving American Standard hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. He worked his way up from the most physically demanding job in the plant to being a corporate salaried employee, answering only to the corporate office in Trenton, NJ. John flew to plants located in the U.S. and Mexico and there were plans for overseas trips prior to his illness. John fought his cancer (which ran from his neck, through his right lung, and into his liver) taking every available chemo treatment. The treatments made him very ill and he developed Cushing’s Disease. He made no plans for his passing (changing his will, cemetery, titles, etc.) and refused to consider any other option than that he was going to beat this cancer. In early 2003 he was advised there were no signs of cancer, and he went off the chemo and took preventative radiation treatments. He missed very little work throughout his fight; a few times his friends at work insisted he go home from work and rest. His last day at work, he drove home himself and collapsed. Later at the hospital it was discovered that the cancer had returned and spread throughout his body, much worse than when he was first diagnosed approximately ten months prior.
John Kesler died as he lived, a fighter. John got up and walked around his home numerous times during his last night. He appeared to be surveying his home but was unable to continue to hide the fact that he was in great pain. John passed as the sun rose and birds began to sign on a Friday morning with his daughter, RN Laura Kesler Gaietto at his side. Laura helped her father throughout the illness. Sandy Kesler and some of her children were present as well.
