1.3.3.1.9 Joseph Lewis Showe (b: 1 Oct 1834 Fayette County, Pa-d: 21 Oct 1863 Mississippi) died from injuries sustained in the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi during the Civil War.
Confederate Maj. Gen. Sterling Price had been ordered by Bragg to move his Army of the West from Tupelo toward Nashville, Tennessee, in conjunction with Bragg’s Kentucky offensive. On September 13, his army reached the town of Iuka in northeastern Mississippi, about 20 miles east of Corinth. It was a small Union supply depot, the easternmost outpost that Grant had established on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.
Price’s cavalry skirmished with pickets posted by the small Union garrison stationed there. On September 14, before dawn, the Union commander, Col. Robert C. Murphy of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry, set fire to the supplies of the depot and marched his 2,000-man brigade back to Corinth. The Confederates dashed in and doused the flames, reaping a large collection of valuable supplies. Rosecrans relieved Murphy and ordered him to be court-martialed.
Price’s army settled in Iuka and awaited the arrival of Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn’s Army of West Tennessee, approximately 7,000 men. The two generals intended to unite and attack Grant’s lines of communication in western Tennessee, which would prevent Buell’s reinforcement if Grant reacted the way they expected, or might allow them to follow Bragg and support his Northern invasion if Grant acted more passively.
Grant did not wait to be attacked, approving a plan to converge on Price with two columns before Van Dorn, four days march to the southwest, could reinforce him. Grant sent Ord with three Army of the Tennessee divisions (about 8,000 men) along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad to move to Burnsville, take the roads to the north of the railroad and move upon Iuka from the northwest. He also ordered Rosecrans’s army on a coordinated move along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad that would bring two divisions (9,000 men) swinging into Iuka from the southwest, closing the escape route for Price’s army, while the remainder of that army protected Corinth against any threat from Van Dorn. The Battle of Iuka marked the beginning of a long professional enmity between Rosecrans and Grant.
Here is an excerpt of a narrative from a document written by Joseph’s son and also based on notes from Kate Jackson Show written in 1914 . It is quite interesting:
Mother (Katherine Ann ‘Kate’ Jackson (4 Jun 1832-8 Sep 1928)) kept house for Jacob Kemp on a farm near Smithfield (note: Kate’s mother was a Kemp, so Jacob was likely an uncle or cousin). While living there she began to keep company with Joseph Lewis Show (1834-1863). They had known each other as children at school for many years. Mother did not remember much about Father’s boyhood. He spent a summer in Virginia and became very fond of a young man named Arley Barthlow. He said if he ever had a son that would be his name, and I am it (Arley Barthlow Show 1856-1920).
The Shows lived 2 or 3 miles from Jacob Kemp. They courted and were married at Jacob Kemp’s on Jan 26 by Rev. M.M. Eaton. When they were first married Father worked at Ohiopyle Falls, earning money for the trip west. Started March 20, 1855 going down Ohio River on a steamboat. Uncle Billy Stanton’s (William Stanton 1822-1888) family went at same time (Clarissa Show’s husband) – Uncle Jacob Show (1825-1888) and family had gone the Fall before.
They took the steamer from Brownsville to Pittsburg – steamboat name she does not remember. From Pittsburg they took the “Empire City” to La Salle, IL, down the Ohio and the Mississippi and up the Illinois. Spent about a week aboard. Only time off was at St. Louis where they spent a day.
Mother used to tell us children about the man who tried to rob a woman sleeping near her on the floor of the cabin. There were so many passengers they had to sleep on floor on mattresses. The thief was one of the cabin boys. Tried to find her purse hidden in back of her dress. Remembers that the first train she ever saw was on the trip – somewhere down the river. At LaSalle they took a freight train to Mendota – her first ride. This was in Spring of 1855. The party consisted of Father & Mother, Uncle Billy and wife, and 2 or 3 children, perhaps four. They were 2 days in St. Louis but did not go about much, not knowing when the boat would leave. Uncle Samuel (Show) was also in the party – unmarried. He was not yet a minister – not ordained. He came along to take up land.
When they reached Winona they all went to Uncle Jacob’s who then lived on a rented farm about three miles NE of Winona – Rushmore place. Stantons soon took pre-emption claim and moved. Uncle Sammy also took claim – all out on prairie SE of town – beautiful prairie near a creek. Father took 40 acres near Winona but never proved up, finding he could not pay for it.
They stayed awhile at Uncle Jacob’s and then moved to Winona to break sod on Rushmore place – plant corn, etc. Stayed there pretty much all summer till sod broken and planted. They they moved to Winona and Father ran threshing machine that Fall. While he was away at work Mother stayed with the wife of his partner, Mrs. Everett. Spent a little time at home of Uncle Billy, who was working at lumber yard in town.
After the threshing was done, late in the fall, they moved out to Sandy Creek, west of town, and rented a room in old man Evans house, planning to chop cordwood that winter, but he soon took the whooping cough and was laid up all winter – had it very hard. They had saved money enough to live on during the winter and they stayed on this Evans place till Spring. In Spring moved to Uncle Jacob’s home on the Rushmore place. Father worked for Uncle Jake and boarded with them. Mother had her room in their house and boarded herself. That summer I was born on the Rushmore place.
That Fall when I was 5 months old Mother took me to Beloit WI, to visit her parents and while she was gone Father dug coal on the Vermillion River east of Winona. Many of their friends came west probably the Fall after Father & Mother came – the fall of 1855. The next Spring (1857) they moved to the Snodgrass farm NE of Winona. Father rented the farm on shares, the owner furnishing the team, etc. The family lived there 2 years.
The 2nd year (Fall of 1858) they planned to go to Wisconsin but move was delayed. As Uncle Jacob persuaded them to rent his claim for the next year. Mostly broke prairie, summer of 1859. Arthur was born Feb. 8, 1859 on this place of Uncle Jacob’s. They lived there another year – 1859/60 and the 2nd year crop was bad. Mother was opposed to staying there. In Fall of 1859 they moved to Wisconsin.
Father enlisted in September 1861. Uncle Charlie (Jackson) got up a 3 month company which served its time. Then he came to Brodhead (Wisc.) and he and Uncle Tom (Jackson) got up another company, enlisting men for 3 years. Father was among the early ones to enlist in Co. B. Mother thinks they talked it over beforehand. She was opposed to his going, but it seemed best.
Shortly after enlistment – in Oct. 1861 – he went into camp at Monroe for some time. Meanwhile, as soon as he enlisted, Father built a wing onto Grandpa’s (Jackson) house and moved the family back there. The plan was for the family to stay there while Father was away. But there was some misunderstanding between Grandpa & Father about the digging of a well, so before he went away he rented a place for the family in Brodhead.
That Spring on April 6 Father was in the battle of Shiloh and was taken prisoner. Father was in prison 52 days at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, then paroled. Came back to barracks at St. Louis,
then sent home in Sept. 1862. Home 3 or 4 weeks, then paroled prisoners of 18th Regt. were sent to Superior City to guard against the Indians. Was there winter of 1862/63, till next June. Then
came back to Madison and from there he came home to bring the news of the Fall of Vicksburg – July 1863.
That night he and Mr. Wilder and Mr. Hitchcock (the three who had driven from Madison to bring the news (no telegraph yet) fired the cannon at the big celebration of the victory on the hill before the Methodist church. That was his last visit Home. He went away before moving, back to Madison.
Shortly after this the regiment – or paroled men – went south again. This Fall he re-enlisted, although Mother did not want him to. When he was home he was often sick with cramps in the stomach. In 1861 he enlisted for 3 years, but when he had seen two years – to the Fall of 1863 he re-enlisted for 4 years more, as Mother remembers it.
This re-enlistment was in Sept. 1863, as she remembers. Then they went south pretty directly, for Father died in October – the 31st she thinks. His birthday was somewhere early in October.
After his death the news was sent to Mother in a letter from a Lt. whose name Mother does not remember. I brought a letter from the P.O. telling that Father was very ill. In same mail was one from Mr. Hitchcock to his wife telling of Father’s death. Mother & Mrs. Wilder carried the letter to Mrs. Hitchcock, and in that way Mother got the news.
Mother was living downstairs in the Spencer house at the time and Mrs. Wilder boarded with her. In the morning Mother told us children. I remember the circumstance.
Several weeks later there was a funeral service for Father at the Methodist Church. The preacher was a man Uncle Alex (Jackson) did not like so he would not go. Mother does not remember the preacher’s name. There was a notice in the paper, now in Mother’s scrapbook in her trunk. Father was a member of the M.E. church in Brodhead, as also was Mother.
In January 1864 Mother took Stella and went to Winona to visit Father’s folks. In Illinois Mother visited with Grandma Show, they going together from place to place. Grandpa Show (Henry Showe 1796-1860) had died back in Pennsylvania, then Grandma (Elizabeth F. Betsy Smell Showe 1796-1866) came to Illinois and lived around among the children in Illinois. She lived some time longer – a year or two – and was buried at Magnolia, probably.
