1.3.1.4 Emanuel Kessler (1812-1853)

1.3.1.4 Emanuel Kessler (b: 27 Oct 1812-d: 9 Jul 1853)

Emanuel was the first child born to Andrew and May Kessler after Catherine died in 1810.

We know that Andrew had a son named Emanuel and left him $2,000 when he died in 1860. But Emanuel is not listed in the U.S. Census in 1850 or 1860 in Maryland. There is an Emanuel Kessler living in Mifflin Township, Richland County, Ohio in 1850 according to the U.S. Census and the entry states that he was born in Maryland.

But there are some contradictions that create doubt about whether this is actually Andrew’s son: 1) My records indicated that Emanuel was born about 1809, but the Census record indicates that he was born about 1812 or 1813; 2) the “Ohio” Emanuel died in 1853, but 3) Andrew Kessler left $2,000 to his son Emanuel in 1860, which does not make sense. Perhaps his will was prepared before Emanuel passed and was never updated.

In the US Census, some of Emanuel’s daughters stated that he was born in Maryland. Other sons and daughters stated Pennsylvania and the youngest reported that he was born in Ohio, even though many of his children were very young at the time he passed.

So, we are left to wonder why we can find no evidence of Emanuel living in Maryland in 1850 or 1860 and how to explain the contradictions if the “Ohio” Emanuel is actually Andrew’s son. Perhaps someday we can resolve this question using DNA testing. Until other evidence is located, I will proceed with the assumption that the “Ohio” Emanuel is Andrew’s son.

Emanuel (b: 27 Oct 1812-d: 9 Jul 1853) was the fourth born son. It is not known when he traveled from Maryland to Richland County, Ohio, which is located northeast of Columbus and west of Canton.

He married Sarah (b: abt. 1815-d: bef. Aug 1850 Richland, Ohio) sometime before 1834. They had seven children. Sarah died before the 1850 U.S. Census was taken on 21 Aug 1850 as she is not included with the family.

Mary ‘Polly’ Sigler (b: 21 Feb 1822-d: 12 Jan 1892) lived nearby — her family is listed in the same 1850 U.S. Census, and she is listed in that census as Mary Sigler, age 24. She and Emanuel married on 27 Aug 1850. They had one daughter, Lodema Almarine, born in 1853.

UPPER WYANDOT, OHIO: Several of Emanual’s descendants lived at some point in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Nestled in the heart of Ohio’s fertile farmland and near the headwaters of the Sandusky River, Upper Sandusky is a community rich with heritage and vibrant in character. Though officially laid out in 1843, its historical roots stretch back to the 1780s, as seen in the many preserved landmarks and stories passed through generations.

The area was once home to the Wyandot Indians, who named the region “Sa-un-dus-tee,” meaning “Water Within Pools.” The term “Upper” refers to the community’s location upstream along the Sandusky River. Upper Sandusky served as the seat of government for the Wyandot Nation. A Council House once stood on the hill adjacent to what is now Harrison-Smith Park. The Wyandot Mission Church, built in 1824 by Rev. James B. Finley, served Native converts and still stands today in the Old Mission Cemetery.

In 1782, Colonel William Crawford, a Revolutionary War veteran and close friend of George Washington, led a campaign to drive Native tribes from Upper Sandusky. The resulting Battle of Upper Sandusky—or Crawford’s Defeat—ended in a tragic loss for his volunteer forces. The site is commemorated by the Battle Island Monument, located north of the city.

In 1842, the Wyandots became the last organized Native American group to leave Ohio, relocating to a reservation in Kansas. The following year, the Village of Upper Sandusky was laid out into lots, and by 1845, the first house had been built. The Treaty of Greenville in 1795, signed by Chief Tarhe, was a foundational step toward peace between Native tribes and settlers. A monument honoring Chief Tarhe stands just outside of town, reminding visitors of the area’s deep cultural roots.

Children and Descendants:

1.3.1.4.1 Andrew Jackson Kessler (abt. 1834 Ashland, Ohio-d: 11 Oct 1895 Clark County, Ohio) married Lena Anna Kessler (2 Nov 1835-d: 26 Feb 1908 Clark County, Ohio) on 3 Jun 1854 in Ohio. Andrew adopted Lena’s daughter, Emma. She is mentioned in his will. There is another “Andrew Kesler” (single “s”) living in Ohio about the same time and married to a Hannah Kesler. I spent a lot of time analyzing the two Andrews and am reasonably sure that the son of Emanuel is the one who married Lena Anna Kessler. The name spelling is part of the reason as is the date of birth.

Andrew fought for the North during the Civil War: Private, Army, 2 May 1864 to 2 Sep 1864, Company D, 142nd Regiment OVI. The 142nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, sometimes 142nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (or 142nd OVI) was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Frank, like his father, was a farmer and spent his years living and working in Barry County, Michigan. Irving Delos Charlton donated property for “Historic Charlton Park” in 1936 to Barry County. The Barry County Museum was started in 1944 but not completed until 1950. This first building in the park is now known as the Irving D. Charlton Memorial Museum. Charlton was an avid collector and dreamed of having a museum. He collected old objects so that future generations might understand the difficult tasks early inhabitants of Barry County performed without the benefit of powered equipment.

1.3.1.4.6.4.3 Mary L. Kessler Reinhard (b: 18 Mar 1906 Henry, Ohio-d: Aft. 1967 San Diego, Ca) married Dolph Reinhard (26 Nov 1907 Oregon-2 Mar 1967 Los Angeles) on 21 Aug 1934 in Los Angeles, California. Mary was a nurse. It was difficult to track her down (I spent a lot of time trying). Dolph is an unusual name, and when I researched him, he married two other women, none of whom was our Mary. So perhaps they had a short-lived marriage, or maybe he was a bigamist. It seems that Mary left LA and moved to San Diego and resumed her career as a nurse. I could track her residence in 1947, but after that I could not find additional records.

1.3.1.4.7 Amanda E. Kessler Ketzel Gross (b: Jan 1848 Ashland, Ohio-d: 1911, Miami, Ohio) married twice. She married John P. Ketzel (abt. 1844-17 Sep 1874 Marion, Ohio), probably just after he finished his service in the Civil War, sometime before 1869. John died at about age 30, likely when Amanda was pregnant with their fourth child, John. They had four children: Amy Jane Ketzel Wetzel (5 Oct 1869-31 May 1915), Clara Pauline Ketzel Bieber (abt. 1873-19 Dec 1968), Margaret ‘Madge’ Ketzel Harrison Capo (20 Jun 1874-1 Sep 1946 Pima, Arizona), and John Ketzel (abt. 1875- June 1951). Note: Researchers will find many genealogical records suggesting that John Ketzel married Amanda Wolfe. I cannot reconcile the “Wolfe” last name, unless I have the wrong John and Amanda. But in the 1880 U.S Census, Amanda is listed with her Ketzel children.

With four small children, she married David Gross (Aug 1839-10 May 1909 Miami, Ohio) on 1 Feb 1880 in Miami County, Ohio. He had one daughter, likely from a previous marriage, named Sarah Gross, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1873. Amanda and David had one additional child: James Franklin Gross (15 Apr 1886-24 Nov 1941).
